This Guide was delivered within the framework of the project titled “A Guide for Mineral Raw Materials of Greece” in English. It was commissioned to the Hellenic Survey of Geology and Mineral Exploration by the Ministry of Environment and Energy. It is the first of its kind, structured to serve as a general guidance document to those who are interested in evaluating the mining landscape of Greece. It consists of summarized information on:
- The legal framework regulating the exploration and exploitation of Mineral Raw Materials (MRM) in Greece.
- The procedures one needs to follow in order to obtain the ownership right to explore and exploit MRM in Greece.
- Areas of potential interest to those who contemplate the possibility and opportunity of exploring and developing new mines in the country.
Included also is an overview of the extractive sector, a list of the competent permitting/licensing authorities and a comprehensive list of definitions on key terms of the mining and quarrying legislation.
The Guide is based on information available at the time of writing. It is not intended to provide comprehensive information, advice, or endorsement of specific projects nor should it serve as a basis for making investment decisions. It should not be regarded as a complete interpretation of applicable laws and practices. It is the responsibility of the interested party to make sure it is aware of what rules and regulations apply to each situation.
The Guide, in its digital version, is hosted on the HSGME portal and offers access to a user-friendly web GIS application and vice versa. The latter was developed to demonstrate the Guide’s content with a geographic reference.
First published in 2022, this Guide has been designed to be easily consulted, distributed and updated. We hope it will come in handy in our efforts to facilitate and support the flaw of information, regarding the development of the MRM sector in Greece.
